Content Description

These photographs document the activities of the Extension Service in Utah from 1914 to 1957. There are reports from all 29 counties in the state, though the dates covered are not the same for each county. The photographs document two basic functions of the Extension Service: Agriculture and Home Demonstration. Agriculture activities include instruction and demonstrations on animal husbandry (including dairy and beef cattle, poultry, sheep, and horses); crop production and diversification; pest control; weed control; stewardship of range resources and erosion control; perfection and expansion of irrigation resources and methods; storage and use of silage; fitting and showing of animals; growth of home gardens; home and land beautification, etc. Home Economy activities include instruction and demonstrations on food preparation, canning, and storage; health maintenance and proper diet; sewing and clothing remodeling; reupholstering furniture; proper posture; handicrafts, etc. Additionally, the Farm Bureau developed the 4-H Club for children, who were encouraged to complete projects in agriculture and home economy.
