Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Charles R. Laidlaw was born in California on February 8, 1899 to Sadie Laidlaw and Charles Laidlaw. At some point, the family moved back to New York, where his father died at some point before Charles was 11 years old. Charles joined the National Guard on April 6, 1917, and served until 1919. Charles was married to a Canadian woman named Ada in 1928 in Vermont, and by 1930 they were living together in Seattle, where he practiced photography on behalf of the government. On July 24, 1963, he remarried with a woman named Bertha G. Julin. Charles R. Laidlaw died in Orange City, Florida, on July 8, 1974, at the age of 75. Laidlaw worked partly in aerial photography, taking pictures of Seattle and Bremerton from above, as well as several in-flight pictures of B-29s, possibly for the military. He also took pictures of several buildings on the UW campus, as well as aerial photos of the UW crew team.
