Historical Note

This collection includes publications from long-standing organizations like the Socialist Party of Great Britain, which has published the monthly magazine the Socialist Standard uninterrupted since 1904, or union organizations like the United Auto Workers (UAW) or Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). Other publishers are short-lived, but related, organizations like Facing Reality, Correspondence, Socialist Worker's Party (SWP), and the Worker's Party (WP)—all of which are connected to the radical historian and journalist, C.L.R James. This collection also includes many 21st century publications from organizations with no relationship to each other, some of which only published one or two issues.

Content Description

This collection contains socialist publications and documents from Britain and North America, mostly dating from the 1960s-1980s. The collection also contains publications and documents related to the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO).

This collection is arranged in two series. Series 1 is mostly subscription-based journals and magazines from radical left-wing organizations in North America and Britain, dates range from 1945 to 2016. Publication content is broad and includes reports on contemporary political issues, ideological treatises, art, and poetry. Publications are produced mostly for educated socialist audiences. The collection also includes pamphlets, posters, and leaflets introducing socialist principles to a wider audience, intended for mass distribution. Series 2 of this collection includes documents and correspondence related to internal conflicts in a set of U.S. socialist organizations, including the Socialist Workers' Party (SWP), the Workers' Party (WP), Facing Reality, and the Correspondence Publishing Committee. Series 2 also includes materials from the United Auto Worker union (UAW) and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). These resources include union-published newspapers and pamphlets, drafts of auto-worker essays, materials about or by UAW leader Walter P. Reuther, and General Motors' union-related documents.
