Historical Note
Major Israel McCreight (b. 1865) went to Devils Lake, North Dakota in 1885, where he was involved in the buffalo bone traffic. He was later a banker and businessman in Pennsylvania. McCreight had a lifelong interest in American Indians and wrote several autobiographical accounts and short Indian histories.
Content Description
The collection includes a scrapbook (1887-1938), autobiographical manuscripts and pamphlets, and an Indian history as told to McCreight by Flying Hawk, a Dakota chief, in 1937.
