Historical Note
Arthur E. Johnson was an oil industry executive in Denver, Colorado. His career began in 1913 with the Franco Petroleum Company (later Midwest Refining). In 1932 he bought the controlling interest of Argo Oil Corporation and became president. In 1936, Johnson served as president and chairman of the board of directors for Midwest Oil Company. He also was the director of the Denver United States National Bank and Denver U.S. Bancorporation.
Content Description
The collection contains business records of Midwest Oil Company and Argo Oil Company focusing mainly on the period of their absorption into Standard Oil in the 1970s. Also included are autobiographical manuscripts by Arthur E. Johnson about his years in the oil industry and a manuscript by Oliver H. Shoup, titled "When Salt Creek Roared," about the development of the Salt Creek Oil Field in Wyoming.
