- John Hipple Mitchell (1835-1905) served in the Oregon State senate from 1862 to 1866 and also served in the U.S. Senate from 1885 to 1897 and 1901 to 1905. The collection contains a letter dated January 31, 1893 from Mitchell to Robert A. Miller, who was also an Oregon politician, regarding Miller's wish to be appointed minister to Turkey.

Historical NoteReturn to Top
John Hipple Mitchell (1835-1905) born in in Washington County, Pennsylvania, as John Mitchell Hipple; by the time he was practicing law in Oregon he was using the name John Hipple Mitchell.
He served in the Oregon State senate, from 1862 to 1866, and the last two years he was President of the Senate.
In 1872, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1873, to March 3, 1879. After the election, his "opponents tried to prevent his seating, charging him with bigamy, desertion, and living under an assumed name, but a Senate committee decided the charges did not merit investigation."
He served in the U.S. Senate again in 1885 until 1897, and was elected again in 1901 and he served until his death in 1905. "At the time of his death, [Mitchell] had been indicted and convicted of having received fees for expediting the land claims of clients before the United States Land Commissioner, and an appeal was pending.

In the letter, Mitchell wrote that he could be glad to do Miller a favor and speak up for him but that he feels it would be improper to recommend anyone to the incoming President unless asked. He also informs Miller that another Portland, Oregon gentleman wrote Mitchell a similar letter.
