Content Description

Guillem Belmar & Jeremías Salazar 2022 field notes, recordings and related materials for Sà'án Sàvi? ñà Yukúnani? (Mixtec). The collection contains 17 recordings, bundled in 10 resources (recording sessions), by 9 different speakers of Sà'án Sàvi? ñà Yukúnani?: Constantino Bautista López, Guillermo Martínez López, Fernando Víctor Morales Velasco, Almadelia Ortiz Cruz, Hermelinda Velasco Bautista, Hilaria Velasco López, and three other speakers who preferred to remain anonymous.

All recordings were made in the village of Yucunani, in the municipality of San Juan Mixtepec (Juxtlahuaca, Oaxaca, Mexico) during the period between January and June 2022. 14 out of the 17 recordings are fully transcribed in the community practical orthography, as well as translated into both English and Spanish. In addition, the files contain the researchers’ notes during the transcription process. The recordings feature personal narratives, commentary on cultural and traditional practices, oral history, suggestions for rearing animals and bee-keeping, as well as a conversation on the traditional alcoholic drinks like pulque.

Verónica Aguilar made all the recordings, with the help of Claudia Salazar as interpreter in some of the recording sessions. The research team in California (Jeremías Salazar, Guillem Belmar Viernes and Eric W. Campbell) worked on the transcriptions and the translations of the materials in both English and Spanish.
