Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Mainwaring Archive Foundation was a Helena, MT-based non-profit focused on collecting the papers of researchers inspired by the popular and controversial writer Immanuel Velikovsky. Beginning in 1950, with the publication of his book Worlds in Collision, Velikovsky proposed a theory that the Earth had been subjected to catastrophic extraterrestrial forces in historic times and that these events had been described in the folklore and myth of worldwide cultures. His subsequent books expanded on this theory and focused on how natural catastrophes impacted cultures in the ancient world. Worlds in Collision became a best seller, but despite its popularity it was widely criticized by the mainstream scientific community.
The Mainwaring Archive Foundation was founded by Albert Bruce Mainwaring, a businessman from Pennsylvania, who was interested in Velikovsky's research. Mainwaring had served on the board of the Velikovskian organization the Foundation for Studies of Modern Science (FOSMOS), which ran from 1968 to the early 1970s. The Mainwaring Archive Foundation collected the personal papers of several FOSMOS members, including Alfred de Grazia and Warner Sizemore, as well as other researchers interested in Velikovsky's work. In addition to personal papers, the Mainwaring Archive Foundation also collected books and periodicals inspired by Velikovsky's theories.
Mainwaring created the foundation in 2000, following a conference organized by David Talbott on Velikovskian theories. Prior to the conference, Mainwaring had discussed the creation of an archive dedicated to Velikovsky's theories with Alfred de Grazia, and the conference inspired Mainwaring to finally create the archive. Bruce Mainwaring's son Scott Mainwaring served as the organization's primary archivist, and for this reason, Mainwaring established the foundation in Helena, MT to allow Scott, who lived in the area, to care for the collection. The organization dissolved in 2022 following Bruce Mainwaring's death.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The records of the Mainwaring Archive Foundation were amassed by Albert Bruce Mainwaring (1927-2022) and curated by his son, Scott Mainwaring. The collection centers on the correspondence and publications of writers who were inspired by the theories of Immanuel Velikovsky. The papers contained in this collection include the research and correspondence of Ralph Juergens, Warner Sizemore, Earl Milton, Alfred de Grazia, Bruce Mainwaring, and Anthony Peratt.
The researchers featured in this collection have used data from space exploration, not available in Velikovsky's time, to further his interdisciplinary research. Their research draws on many fields of study including psychology, chemistry, physics, and anthropology. Researchers like Anthony Peratt, a plasma physicist, and Earl Milton, an astronomer, specialized in specific disciplines while other individuals featured in the collection were more broadly involved in Velikovskian research through their work publishing journals and supporting research endeavors.

Processing Note
Files in this collection have not been arranged by the archivist. They are in the original order in which they were received from the donor. Folder titles were derived by the creators, and have only been altered by the archivist to provide additional clarity on names and abbreviations. Most of the original folders have been retained and have only been replaced when they were damaged or hampered access to materials.
Files in Series 4: Alfred de Grazia papers have been cleaned for mold. Documents that were heavily mold-damaged have been photocopied, and the originals have been discarded. Although all surface mold has been removed, researchers using these files should take care, as mold may still present health hazards.
This collection was processed 2024 January 25.
Detailed Description of the CollectionReturn to Top
1: Ralph Juergens Papers, 1946-1979Return to Top
Ralph Juergens (6 May 1924 – 2 November 1979) was a general contractor from Lakewood, OH. He was an early disciple of Immanuel Velikovsky and associate editor for the journal Pensee. Juergens received a BS in Civil Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and ran a contracting company, Ralph E. Juergens Co. General Contracting. He also worked in the Construction Methods department at McGraw-Hill Publishing.
Juergens was first introduced to the works of Velikovsky by his sister Harriet in 1961, who gave him a copy of Worlds in Collision. Juergens wrote to Velikovsky that same year expressing interest in his work. Juergens co-authored the book The Velikovsky Affair: The Warfare of Science and Scientism, with Alfred de Grazia and Livio C. Stecchini in 1966 and published numerous articles drawing on Velikovsky's theories between 1972 and 1983.
In 1972, Juergens proposed a theory of an electrically powered sun. Juergens's theory was inspired by Velikovsky's 1946 book Cosmos without Gravitation, although Velikovsky himself did not endorse this theory. After 1972, Juergens focused much of his research and writing on his electric sun theory.
Ralph Juergens's papers contain drafts of his essays and correspondence. The bulk of these materials feature research, articles, and book manuscripts by Juergens in support of Velikovsky's theories and Juergens's electric sun theory. Other materials include unsolicited manuscripts by other authors sent to the editors of Pensee. They also contain photocopies of Juergens's letters to Velikovsky between 1961 and 1979.

2: Warner Sizemore Papers, 1946-1981Return to Top
Warner Sizemore (23 October 1925 – 11 April 2017) was an associate professor of World Religions at Glassboro State College (now Rowan University). He graduated from East Tennessee State University and Bob Jones University and became an ordained Presbyterian minister. Sizemore served at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Malvern, PA, but in the mid-1960s left the ministry and moved to Princeton, NJ where he began working as Immanuel Velikovsky's secretary. Sizemore also served as an executive editor of the journal Kronos and wrote several articles for the publication.
Warner Sizemore's papers consist of correspondence related to his work as Immanuel Velikovsky's secretary. Much of the correspondence is either to or from Velikovsky, but a small amount is from Sizemore on Velikovsky's behalf, such as Sizemore's correspondence with Velikovsky's publisher Doubleday. Other materials include correspondence related to Velikovsky's speaking engagements and essays for publication in Kronos.

4: Alfred de Grazia Papers, 1963-2000Return to Top
Alfred de Grazia (29 December 1919 – 13 July 2014) was a political scientist and author. He was born in Chicago to Alfred de Grazia Sr. and Katherine Lupo de Grazia. He received a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago in 1948 and worked as a professor of political science at University of Minnesota, Brown University, and a professor of social theory at New York University.
De Grazia has written extensively in both the political science field and on the works of Immanuel Velikovsky and controversies surrounding his theories. His most notable work related to Velikovsky is the 1963 edited collection of essays, The Velikovsky Affair: The Warfare of Science and Scientism with Ralph Juergens and Livio C. Stecchini. The book focused on the scientific community's rejection of Velikovsky's theories and scientific censorship.
An ardent supporter of Velikovsky's theories about the impact of extraterrestrial catastrophes on Earth, de Grazia sought to incorporate these ideas into a new field of study he called "quantavolution." Between 1981 and 1984, he published ten volumes of his Quantavolution Series, which outlined his theories of how sudden, catastrophic events of cosmic origins impacted early humanity.
Files in this series have been cleaned for mold. Documents that were heavily mold-damaged have been photocopied, and the originals have been discarded. Although all surface mold has been removed, researchers using these files should take care, as mold may still present health hazards.
Alfred de Grazia's papers consist entirely of de Grazia's personal correspondence related to his writing, and his involvement with Immanuel Velikovsky and other Velikovskian thinkers. The correspondence dates from 1963 to 2000. Much of the correspondence focuses on catastrophism, de Grazia's quantavolution theories, and defense of Velikovsky from the criticism he received against the scientific community.

5: Bruce Mainwaring Papers, 1969-2001Return to Top
Albert Bruce Mainwaring (23 February 1927 – 6 September 2022) was born in Roxborough, PA to Albert Harold Mainwaring and Ethel Hansbury Mainwaring in 1927. Mainwaring graduated from the University of Pennsylvania around 1945 with a degree in mathematics. During World War II, Mainwaring served as a lieutenant in the Navy and completed his education as part of a Navy officers training program. After the war, he worked at his father's machine shop, which manufactured small diameter metal tubing. Mainwaring used financing from the G.I. Bill to buy a farm in a suburb of Philadelphia, where he relocated his father's machine shop. The tubing the company produced was used in electronics like radios and televisions and eventually expanded into the aviation and aerospace markets. Manwaring eventually served as founder and CEO of three precision metal tubing manufacturing firms.
Mainwaring was first introduced to the works of Immanuel Velikovsky in 1963 when he read an article by Eric Laribee in Harper's magazine about Velikovsky's theories. Mainwaring later bought Velikovsky's three books and developed a lifelong interest in his work. He met Velikovsky at a lecture at the Hill School in Pottstown, PA in 1968. That same year, Mainwaring formed the Foundation for Studies of Modern Science (FOSMOS) with other researchers, including Alfred de Grazia, David Talbott, and Warner Sizemore. The organization used an inter-disciplinary research approach to explore Velikovsky's theories. He served on the organization's board of trustees and as its treasurer. In 2001, Mainwaring also founded the Mainwaring Archive Foundation, which focused on exploring alternatives to mainstream science and collected the papers of researchers interested in the works of Velikovsky.
Bruce Mainwaring's papers contain a small amount of correspondence and records related to his work for the Foundation for Studies of Modern Science (FOSMOS). They include founding documents for FOSMOS as well as paperwork related to the dissolution of the organization. They also include fundraising correspondence for the organization and documents related to a carbon dating project that the group initiated. These files are dated 1968 to 1973.
Other files include correspondence of Immanuel Velikovsky dated 1950s-1960s that Alfred de Grazia photocopied and sent to Mainwaring. There is also correspondence between de Grazia and Mainwaring, 1984-1999, regarding a potential Museum of Quantavolution dedicated to research around Velikovsky's theories. There is also a large file of correspondence with Edwin "Eddie" Schorr who worked as Velikovsky's library assistant while a graduate student at Princeton University.

6: Collected Files on Anthony Peratt, 2000-2010Return to Top
Anthony Peratt (1 September 1942 – ) is an electrical engineer and researcher in the field of plasma physics. He received a BS in electrical engineering from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 1964. He later received both an MS (1967) and Ph.D. (1971) from University of Southern California (USC) in electrical engineering. From 1972 to 1979 he worked as a staff member for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA and was a guest scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching, Germany (1975-1979) and the Alfven Laboratory, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden (1985). Peratt began working at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1981 in the Applied Theoretical Physics Division and has served as the Scientific Advisor to the United States Department of Energy (1995-1999).
Peratt's research on the connection between plasma physics and ancient petroglyphs drew interest from Velikovskian researchers. Peratt has corresponded with David Talbott and Bruce Mainwaring regarding a 2001 lecture he delivered at the University of Pennsylvania, and his research and theories have been discussed on the Kronia listserv.
This small collection of files features articles and drafts by Anthony Peratt on the topic of plasma physics and ancient petroglyphs, which proposed that ancient people witnessed atomospheric plasma discharges and recorded these events in petroglyphs. This research analyzes similar images depicted in petroglyphs across the globe.
Much of the correspondence in these files is with Bruce Mainwaring and relates to a 2001 lecture Peratt delivered at the University of Pennsylvania. Other files include printouts from the Kronia group listserv discussing Peratt's work, and research related to Peratt's petroglyph survey.
