Detailed Description of the Collection

 

  • Accession No. 2099-001: Leo Weisfield oral history interview, 1973-1977

    2 sound cassettes (total 1 hr. 50 min.); transcript: 89 pages

    Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview with transcript covering years 1915-1960 and conducted by Karyl Winn and Jeanette Schrieber on 2/12/73 and 2/23/73; clipping, 1977.

    Mr. Weisfield discusses the credit jewelry business, his expansion to other cities and later into discount department stores. He mentions how he sought financing to accomplish this. He touches on his interest in working for the community and his early recognition of discrimination against Jews. In the second interview, Mr. Weisfield touches on his interest and involvement in Democratic Party politics and his support of labor. He discusses the orientations of various groups in the Jewish community in the Twenties and reflects on his position with respect to them. The clipping describes the family business.
