Historical Note

The University of Wyoming Libraries was established in 1897 and initially housed in Old Main, the university’s original building. In 1923, the library relocated to the Aven Nelson Building, and later, in 1957, it moved to its current location in the William R. Coe Library Building. Over time, the University Libraries system expanded to include several specialized branches and collections, such as the Grace Raymond Hebard Collection, the Library Annex, the Geology Library, the National Park Service UW Research Library, and the Rocky Mountain Herbarium. The Libraries also played a central role in major statewide digital initiatives, including the Wyoming Bibliography project, which aimed to compile a comprehensive list of publications related to Wyoming, and the Wyoming Newspaper Project, which digitized and provided public access to historic Wyoming newspapers. The Libraries system supports academic research and instruction across a wide range of disciplines at the University of Wyoming.
