Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Camp Paxson is located on 15 acres of the west shore of Seeley Lake in northwestern Montana. It was founded in 1918 as a Boy Scout tent camp by K.D. Swan, a photographer for the U.S. Forest Service, and named for western artist Edgar Paxson. In the late 1930s, the camp received a Works Progress Administration (WPA) grant, which allowed for the construction of 15 log sleeping cabins, two bathhouses, a caretaker's cabin, and a lodge. The structures were all built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the U.S. Forest Service in 1939 and 1940. The camp is a Lolo National Forest Service site and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. This collection features print photographs of the construction of the sleeping cabins, bathhouses, and lodge. Hank Wilson is noted as the CCC supervisor, but none of the other crew members are identified.
