Historical Note
The Wyoming Bicentennial Commission (WBC) was the state board responsible for local celebrations of the national bicentennial in 1976. Wyoming photojournalist Charles “Pat” Hall served as executive director of the WBC in 1976.
Content Description
The collection contains commemorative envelopes. There are three envelopes postmarked July 4, 1973 from Freedom, Wyoming, labeled “The Spirit of ’76 in the American West; an envelope commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association (1973); and envelopes commemorating Fort Laramie, “Old Bedlam” (Fort Laramie’s post headquarters), and Banner, Wyoming; envelopes commemorating Wyoming’s Native Americans, Wyoming Governor Nellie Tayloe Ross, First Flight – CAM #12, the Cheyenne and Black Hills Stage and Express Company, Centennial, Wyoming, and Independence Rock. Also included are commemorative stamps for the American Bicentennial, Centennial, Wyoming, Nellie Tayloe Ross, and Fort Laramie. Additionally, there two booklets: a booklet titled At Noon We Reached Independence Rock… edited by Pat Hall and prepared by the WBC (1973) and a booklet by Pat Hall titled Documents of Wyoming Heritage published by the WBC (1976).
Also included are other commemorative items issued by the WBC, including a souvenir card with stamps labeled “History through Stamps, 125th Anniversary – Fort Laramie, Wyoming, 1849-1974”; a “Bicentennial Passport to Wyoming”; a commemorative coin with the Great Seal of Wyoming; two commemorative medallions; and a certificate of appreciation awarded to the University of Wyoming by the WBC (1977). Included is a photograph of the “76 Wagon” and transcript of a conversation between Pat Hall and Millicent James of Kaycee, Wyoming, to authenticate the photograph that allegedly included Nate Champion, who was killed during the Johnson County War. There are also reprints of Bicentennial Times issued by the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission (1976).
