Historical Note
Augustus Braun Kinzel (1900-1987) was a metallurgist. After earning a degree in mathematics from Columbia University, Kinzel began his career with General Electric Laboratories. He then earned a degree in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1921. In 1926, Kinzel took a position as a research metallurgist at Union Carbide where he served as chief metallurgist, vice-president, president, director, and vice-president of research over the course of 29 years. Kinzel served as the first president of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers and the National Academy of Engineering.
