Historical Note

James Mickelson (1866-1921) was born in Denmark and came to the United States at the age of sixteen. He worked briefly in the coal mines in Rock Springs, Wyoming, before becoming a ranch hand. He homesteaded his first cattle ranch on La Barge Creek in Lincoln County, Wyoming, in 1884. In 1895, he bought the ranch property of Otto Leifer west of Big Piney, Wyoming, which he expanded. He continued to live there until his death in 1921. He married Mildred Avery in 1899, and she and two children, James Jr. and Mildred, survived him. Mickelson was also president of the State Bank of Big Piney, a Republican member of the Wyoming House of Representatives (1917), and a presidential elector from Wyoming in 1920.
