Historical Note
The Century 21 Exposition, also known as the Seattle World's Fair, was held from April 21 through October 21,1962 on the grounds of what became the Seattle Center. The brainchild of City Councilman Al Rochester and backed by a Civic Center bond, state and federal funding, the Century 21 Exposition focused on modern science, space exploration and a progressive future. Iconic Seattle structures such as the Space Needle, Alweg monorail, and the United States Science Pavilion (now the Pacific Science Center) were constructed specifically for the exposition. The fair featured a "Gayway"--a family-friendly amusement park--and "Show Street"--a more adult-focused section with bars, restaurants and nightclubs, as well as space and technology-themed exhibits and demonstrations, and live performances by international and Native American groups. The fair hosted over 10 million visitors from around the world and was credited for revitalizing Seattle's economic and cultural status.
