Historical NoteReturn to Top

Caroline Lexow Babcock was a notable figure a part of the women’s suffrage movement in the early twentieth century. After women gained the right to vote with the 19th Amendment, Babcock served as secretary of the National Woman’s Party until --where she worked with Alice Paul to advance the Equal Rights Amendment. The fate of this amendment would occupy her attention the rest of her life.

Babcock also served as secretary for the Women’s Peace Union and Woman’s Political Union where she counted Harriot Stanton Blatch as one of her close associates.

Alongside her policies for women’s enfranchisement, Babcock also believed in the right of women to access birth control, the abolishment of capital punishment, animal rights, and Native American rights.
