Two letters, dated Fort Ellis, Montana Territory, November 11, 1877 and January 5, 1878, to Samuel Howe, Ashton, Illinois, describing the Oliver Howe's experiences during the battle of Snake Creek (also known as the battle of Bear Paw) during the Nez Perce campaign of 1877 and garrison life at Fort Ellis. Also included is a map by Charles Quillon, drawn October 20, 1877, showing the Snake Creek battlefield and the positions of the opposing forces during the battle.
