Content Description
The Matarazzo Papers consist of 10 linear feet of material from 1955-1996, collected by Matarazzo during his tenure as chairman of the Department of Medical Psychology at the University of Oregon Medical School and its successors, the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center and Oregon Health Sciences University. The papers include records of the Department of Medical Psychology, plus several campus bodies of which Matarazzo was a member, including the Long Range Planning Council, Clinical Department Heads, Faculty Senate, and other faculty bodies. An accrual in 2014 added about 6 more linear feet of material.
Biographical Note
Joseph Dominic Matarazzo was born on November 12, 1925, in Italy. He received a B.A. from Brown University in 1946, an MS from Northwestern University in 1950, and a Ph.D. in psychology, also from Northwestern University, in 1952. After stints at Washington University and Harvard, Matarazzo became chairman of the Department of Medical Psychology at the University of Oregon Medical School in June of 1957. He served in this capacity through the end of 1996. On January 1, 1997, the Department of Medical Psychology became the Department of Behavioral Neuroscience, and Matarazzo relinquished his chairmanship to become Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience.

Arrangement
The collection is serialized into some general categories as follows: Series I B1-B5 Administration, Series II B6-B13 Departmental affairs, Series III B14-B20 Faculty organization & meeting minutes, Series IV B21-B32 2014 Accrual. An attempt at consecutive chronology has been attempted in an overall sense, but individual files are usually in reverse chronological order. An attempt to create a live photo link has been made. In case of failure, the link can be copied to a browser to access.
Acquisition Information
The Matarazzo papers were donated by Dr. Matarazzo on November 5, 1997.
Separated Materials
The papers originally included a number of campus publications collected by Matarazzo. Some of these were removed from the papers and cataloged as part of the library's monograph collection. Other publications were discarded; these are listed below. All are duplicated in the OHSU Libraries' holdings, except those marked with a "*".
