Historical Note
The Undine operated from 1887 to 1935 on the Columbia and lower Willamette was originally built in Portland, Oregon for Jacob Kamm. Kamm's son, Capt. Charles T. Kamm was the Undine's first captain. The Undine carried freight, including cans and packed canned and picked salmon for the Eureka Packing Company and Lindenberger fish packing company, as well as materials for flour mills, cattle, cordwood, logging supplies, timber, steel rails for railroads, prunes, and more. The Undine was rebuilt in 1917 and 1921, then sold and renamed as the Dalles in 1935, and finally dismantled in 1940.
Content Description
Captain's logbook for the Columbia and Willamette River sternwheeler Undine, operated by the Vancouver Transportation company. Captains include Archibald L. "Scotty" McNeill, William E. Larkins, Winfield S. Copeland, and Wilmer David McCully. Records transport between Portland, Vancouver, and Astoria. Entries include weather, the condition of the ship, passengers, and other notes. Also mentions the steamer Lurline which sunk at Rainier, Oregon on November 22, 1906, but which was later run aground and repaired.
