Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Paul K. Robbins was born on August 13, 1939 to Calvin Boardman and Eleanor Kelleher Robbins. He grew up in New Jersey and served in the United States Army as a military information officer during the Korean War. After leaving the military, Robbins went to work for the United Press International in Boston as the New England Bureau Chief.

In the 1970s, Tony Wise hired Robbins to write about World Cup Nordic ski racing at the Telemark Lodge in Wisconsin to publicize the event. Around the same time, Robbins wrote a weekly news feed for Phil Camp’s New England Ski Areas Council. In the early 1980s, Robbins took a job as a traveling correspondent with the United States Ski Team. He covered eight Olympic Winter Games beginning in 1980 in Lake Placid. Robbins served as the ski historian for the US Ski Team. His work appeared in numerous industry publications, and he served as a commentator for Nordic sports for CBS and NBC. Over the course of his career in sports journalism, Robbins expanded from covering Nordic skiing to include various winter sports including snowboarding. Paul Robbins died on February 23, 2008.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Paul Robbins photograph collection consists of 4 boxes containing 3,059 color slides, transparencies, postcards, negatives and black-and-white photographs and negatives collected and taken by Robbins over the course of his career as a ski journalist and historian. The collection spans from approximately the 1960s to 2005. Box 1 contains color slides and transparencies documenting a United States Ski Association Eastern Championship series. The images were removed from a binder titled" USSA 1186 FIS Regional Series Slide Production" and also contain views of the mountain at Mt. Snow Ski and Golf Resort, Times Square in New York City, ski resort in Italy and a ski lodge. The images in Box 1 may not have been produced by Robbins, since most are labeled either "David K. Verner," "FUZZ," and "Mt. Snow Ski and Golf Resort c. Bob Perry."

Box 2 contains black-and-white and color photographs and negatives of members of the U.S. Ski Team and other skiers, primarily taken by Robbins in the course of his work as a ski journalist. The images are alphabetized by the last name of the athlete. Box 3 continues the portraits of skiers and contains photographs of unidentified and identified ski competitions and training. Box 4 contains photographs of ski areas, resorts, and events in Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Utah, and Vermont. There are also imges of events and scenes in Austria, Canada, Norway and Switzerland. There is a large concentration of images of skiing in New England, where Robbins lived; particularly Vermont and New Hampshire.
