Biographical Note

Robert Hugh Ross received his B.Arch from the University of Washington in 1941, where he studied under Lionel Pries and developed his fine skills in draftsmanship. Many of Ross's designs were featured in the Pacific Northwest Living section of the Seattle Times, including his own residence in Laurel Vista, 1957; the John B. Mitchell residence at 3 Tree Point Lane, 1962; the Clyde MacDonald residence remodel in Kirkland, 1964; the Pittelko residence remodel, 1973; and the Robert Felthous vacation home on San Juan Island, 1973. Early in his career, Ross worked as Chiefs Draftsman and Associated Architect with John Ridley, Architect, during the late 1940s and early 1950s, and as an architect with the Seattle Parks Department. Ross worked as an associate of fellow UW alumni Fred Bassetti for over twenty years during the 1960s and 1970s and was associated with his firms, first as Bassetti and Morse, and later as Fred Bassetti and Company.

As an associate architect of Fred Bassetti and Company, Ross received many awards for his work with construction specifications from the Puget Sound chapter and also the national organization of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI). Locally, he was awarded a Finnegan Award for his specifications for the Lindbergh High School gymnasium addition in Renton, 1979; and the Sanitary Market Building [Pike Place Market] rehabilitation, 1980. Nationally, he received a First Place Award for the Children's Zoo at Woodland Park, 1966; an Honorable Mention for his specifications of Kent City Hall, 1971; a Merit award for the Mabel Zoe Wilson Library remodel at Western Washington State College, Bellingham, 1973; an Honor award for the Bothell Headquarters Fire-Station, 1979; and an Honor award for the KGW Radio and Television building in Portland, Oregon, 1980. After working with Specifications Northwest, where he received a national honor award from the CSI for his work with the National Building in the Waterfront Center development project, he formed his own practice as Robert Ross Specifications in 1987.

Robert Ross was a member of the Seattle chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He passed away in 2013.
