Historical NoteReturn to Top

Ralph Ward Dawson was born in Lincoln, Nebraska 1 May 1887. He received a bachelors of science from University of Nebraska in 1912, where he stayed on as insructor and assistant professor in entomology. He then went to the Univeristy of Minnesota as an instructor of zoology, graduating with a PhD in 1929. After graduating, he became Associate Professor of Zoology at University of Minnesota, until he retired in 1952. After retirement, Dawson lived in Colorado and Arizona, where he gained an interest in Navajo rug patterns. He moved to Pullman, WA in 1959, where he volunteered as Collaborator in the Department of Entomology at Washington State University. Dawson passed away at Folsom, CA, 1 March 1974.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists of three large albums of prints taken by Ralph Dawson. Subjects primarily include landscapes and flora and fauna found during he travels throughout the Southwest, California and Florida, but also the insects he studied, animals, birds, woodland scenes, swamps, and portraits of colleagues. In addition to the mounted, bound prints, there was also a significant number of negatives, most in poor condition. It was found that many of the negatives were cellulose nitrate, and those were safely disposed of. Any safety negatives or glass plates were saved and rehoused in archival sleeves. Slides showing Navajo weaving and cassettes of Dawson explaining the photo albums are also included, as well as a typed transcript of Dawson's explanations of the images, offering descriptions and thoughts for each of the books of prints.
