Ray Ogura (1922-2016) was a Japanese American military veteran who served in the 442nd Regiment, Company G, and the Military Intelligence Service Unit during World War II. He settled in Utah after his military service, where he opened several businesses and worked for the Utah Transit Authority. This collection consists of 8 digital-only images depicting Ray Ogura during his military service in the 1940s and visiting the Go for Broke monument in California in the 1980s.

Biographical Note

Ray Ogura was born on May 2, 1922 to Ishinosuke and Masa Ogura. He grew up in Corvallis, Oregon. The family was imprisoned in Minidoka Relocation Center during World War II. From there, Ogura enlisted in the United States Army, where he served with the 442nd Infantry Regiment, Company G and with the Military Intelligence Service Unit. Ogura received several medals for his actions in the military, including a Bronze Star. Ray Ogura married Sachi Fukui on July 18, 1948 in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he settled after being discharged from the military. Ray and his brother Ken started K and R Market and Masa Cleaners. Later, Ray Ogura worked for the Utah Transit Authority. Ray Ogura died on December 26, 2016. (Source: "Ray Ogura Obituary," Salt Lake Tribune, January 8, 2017)

Content Description

The Ray Ogura digital photograph collection consists of 8 digital only images. They were scanned from four 6x7.5 black-and-white photograph prints of Ray Ogura during his World War II service and four 4x6 color photograph of Ray Ogura at the Go For Broke Monument in California. The prints date from the 1940s and circa 1999-2000. The original prints were returned to the donor.
