Biographical Note

Lambert F. Florin (1905-1993) was born in Rainier, Ore., to Carl Hjalmar and Nanny Maria Florin. He died at his home in Portland, Or. Florin attended high schools in Portland and Vancouver, Wash. Until the early 1960s, he worked as a floral designer for Tommy Luke Flowers (Portland), with a stint during World War II in the Portland Fire Department. He and his wife, Dorothie, had one daughter.

By the early 1960s, Florin had combined his passion for ghost towns and photography to make a living writing heavily illustrated books on the subject, starting with Western Ghost Towns, published in 1961 by Superior Publishing. Superior remained his publisher throughout his writing career, which concluded in 1982 with Gold Locations in Oregon and Washington. Florin had a variety of other historical interests that fueled his writing, including historic cemeteries, churches, trees, and even outhouses. He also contributed illustrated articles to numerous magazines, including Alaska Sportsman, Desert Magazine, Frontier Times, and True West.

Florin's interest in historic trees led him to collect seed from a single-needle pinyon in Rockland, Nev., and plant it on the grounds of his Portland home on Tolman Street. The tree is one of the Heritage Trees of Portland, Or..

Content Description

The collection consists primarily of photographs taken between 1960 and 1980 by Lambert Florin to illustrate his books on the history of the American West, along with some historic images he collected for his many projects. Major subjects documented by the collection include: ghost towns, abandoned mining operations, nineteenth century architecture, horse-drawn vehicles, grave markers, privies, and western trees. Many of the images were published by Superior Publishing Company (Seattle) in the following books written by Florin, which contain extended caption information for many of the images in the collection:

Detailed Description of the Collection

  • Series A: Ghost Towns, circa 1950-1980

    Approximately 1,080 items.

    Consists of photographic prints of western "ghost towns," primarily old mining towns which were abandoned when nearby silver or gold was no longer profitable to mine. At the time these photographs were made, most of these towns were nearly deserted, but a few showed evidence of revitalization from either tourism and or a return to mining stimulated by increased ore prices. Note that images of restored buildings are filed in the Architecture series. In addition to ghost town views, the series includes a small quantity of unidentified locations and building interiors, as well as portraits of residents of the abandoned towns.

    The series is arranged alphabetically by state, territory, or province, with locations organized alphabetically by location within these categories.

  • Series B: Abandoned Mining Operations, circa 1950-1980

    80 items.

    Photographs depict abandoned mining company buildings and equipment, including coke ovens, stamp mills, head frames, gold dredges, tailing wheels, trams, and ore cars. Many were used in Florin's books on ghost towns. For images of mining towns, see the Series A: Ghost Towns.

    The series is organized alphabetically by state or province and then alphabetically by locations.

  • Series C: Architecture, circa 1950-1980

    286 items.

    Consists primarily of views of churches, residences, and commercial buildings constructed during the late nineteenth century. Included are fine examples of Italianate, French Second Empire, Queen Anne, Eastlake, and other Victorian architectural styles. Many of the images were used to illustrate Historic Western Churches and Victorian West.

    The series is organized into subseries alphabetically by type of structure, and by location alphabetically within subseries.

  • Series D: Historic Graves, Markers, and Memorials, circa 1950-1980

    540 items.

    Many of the images in this series appear in Boot Hill and Tales the Western Tombstones Tell, as well as in Florin's ghost town books. The series is organized into three subseries: Historic Sites and Markers, Cemeteries, and Graves and Markers. Within the subseries, the folders are generally organized alphabetically by location. The Lewis and Clark Expedition is included in the Historic Sites and Markers subseries. The Cemeteries subseries includes cemeteries organized by locations. The Graves and Markers subseries includes individual graves arranged alphabetically by surname, Indian graves and monuments, common graves, as well as gravestone details, statues, and epitaphs.

      Includes images of graves and markers from throughout British Columbia and the western United States. Some markers show that they were placed by fraternal groups such as the Woodmen of the World and labor groups such as miners' unions. Images include close-up views of markers, gravestones, and wider views of cemeteries and marker locations. The gravestones and markers range from simple wooden slabs to heavily engraved, ornate stones and mausoleums and include some enclosed within fences.The subseries is arranged alphabetically by names of the deceased; the location of the cemetery or marker site is listed, if known.

    Most of the images in this series appeared in Backyard Classic. Many of the privies were photographed in abandoned towns. Some have been "restored" and/or converted to other uses. In addition to images of the outhouses, the series includes photographs of soil pollution resulting from their use. Note that some images in this series by photographers other than Lambert Florin are restricted as to use.

    The series consists of an album that includes 76 black-and-white photographic prints and a clipping from the Oregon Journal, May 31, 1972, and four other prints (three duplicate those in the album) that document a flood that destroyed the town of Vanport. The town was built in the north Portland area to house shipyard workers and their families during World War II. Florin, whose hand-written captions accompany many prints in the album, lived in a houseboat on the Columbia off Marine Drive so was on the scene quickly with his camera. He also took some of the images during a boat trip on the river. Three images included in the album are commercial aerial views. All others are by Florin.
