Historical Note
Charles Freeman was born in England on July 11, 1900. He was a playwright, drama critic, and radio and television writer. Freeman directed several New York productions, including “Song of Norway” (1944) and the revival of “Diamond Lil” (1949) with Mae West. He adapted the film “Calamity Jane” for the musical stage, and the production was presented as a television special with Carol Burnett in 1964, and was later presented abroad. He wrote articles for The New York Times and Variety, was director of the musical-theatre division of the American Theatre Wing 1954-1964, and was president of the Outer Critics Circle. Charles passed away on March 1, 1979 in New York.
Content Description
Collection consists mainly of Freeman's professional files containing theater and some radio and television scripts, notes, outlines, synopses, reviews and articles written by Freeman. There are also related legal documents, photographs, correspondence and miscellaneous materials.
