Historical Note
The hearing of Hum Fay, et al., complainants, v. Frank Baldwin, et al., defendants, took place in the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court, District of Montana, Butte, February 23-August 20, 1898. The plaintiffs alleged a boycott by labor unions against Chinese and Japanese establishments and against businesses and households employing orientals in Butte, Montana, from December 1896 to April 1897, Judge Henry N. Blake of Helena presided over the case. The Chinese were counseled by Wilbur F. Sanders and Francis Brooks. Frank Baldwin, a restaurant waiter and union member, and the other twenty union defendants were represented by George A. Clark, John N. Kirk, J.L, Wines, and M.L. Wines. Approximately 110 witnesses from both sides testified between February and August 1898.
