Biographical Note

A. Rutgers Van der Loeff was born in Groninger, Holland and educated at the Commercial Institute in Amsterdam. He came to the United States in 1904 and settled in San Francisco. After the San Francisco earthquake and fire in 1906, Van der Loeff came to Spokane and established the Van der Loeff Studios, a commercial art firm. He worked as a commercial artist until his death.

Content Description

The first eleven diaries, beginning in 1893 and continuing through 1905, are written in Dutch. They cover his life in Holland, his travels in Europe, and his trip to, and life in America. The 1915-1916 volume is in English and chronicles in great detail his life in Spokane.
