Biographical Note

Florence Philbrick Dodge (1904-1997) was born in Seattle, Washington to parents Charles Benjamin Dodge and Annie MacConnell. She attended Franklin High School and went on to attend the University of Washington and Mount Holyoke College. She married Karl Russell Philbrick in 1925.

Content Description

Diary of Florence P. Dodge. The diary covers January-December 1918. She was age 13-14 when the diary was written. She attended Franklin High School. The diarist notes her schoolwork, domestic activities, visitors, holidays, and other aspects of daily life. She mentions movies she sees, a summer vacation at Duckabush on Hood Canal, and the influenza epidemic late in 1918.

Custodial History

The diary was found in a boarding house in Gorham, Maine following the death in 1981 of its proprietor, Virginia Hansen Whetzell. It was donated by Mrs. Whetzell's nephew, Jack Hansen.
