Content Description

The Photographs of Dr. Sterling Moss McMurrin show his broad interests such as education, philosophy, government positions, and daily life. The collection includes several military photographs of Dr. McMurrin with Air Force pilots in fighter jets, luncheons with military personnel at Fort Douglas, and pictures aboard the USS Princeton Aircraft Carrier. Also included are pictures of the formal reception at NEA to welcome the new U.S. Commissioner of Education, The American-Japanese Cultural Exchange, and several photographs picturing Dr. Sterling McMurrin with former United States President John F. Kennedy.

Dr. Sterling M. McMurrin is a nationally recognized educator, administrator, and philosopher. He was a Professor of Philosophy and History at the University of Utah in 1948; Academic Vice President, 1960-1961; Provost, 1965-1966; and Dean of Graduate School, University of Utah, 1966-1979. Dr. McMurrin also held many National positions as well, including United States Commissioner of Education, 1961-1962; and Chairman of the Commission on Instructional Technology, 1968-1970. He also was a member of State of Utah Coordinating Council of Higher Education, 1968.
