Historical Note
Clark E. Luther (b. 1924) was an airline captain for Capitol Airlines and an executive with United Airlines. During World War II, Luther served as a pilot in U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. He joined Capital Airlines as a pilot in 1948, and served as the airline’s Director of Flight Operations (1960-1961). When Capital merged with United Airlines, Luther served as a pilot (1961-1966) and then in various executive roles (1966-1984) with United in their flight operations and personnel areas. He retired from United in 1984. Capitol Airlines was a U.S. charter airline, operational from 1946 to 1984. Capital merged with United Airlines in 1961.
Content Description
The collection contains a reprint of a 1953 article on mileage limitations by Luther; correspondence (1952-1961); and legal documents with Capitol Airlines (1956-1959). Also includes flight calculators, charts, manuals, minutes, newsletters, photographs, regulations, reports, and other materials from 1949 to 1980 regarding flight, company and union concerns, and operations.
