Historical Note
Dietrich Bodenstein (1908-1984) was a biologist who specialized in zoology and entomology. He received his Ph.D. in Germany. After immigrating to the United States in 1934, Bodenstein became a research assistant at Stanford University from 1934 to 1941. From 1941 to 1943, he became a fellow at Columbia University. Working a stint as an entomologist at the New Haven Experimental Station in 1944, Bodenstein went on to become insect physiologist at the U.S. Army Chemical Center until 1957. Thereafter, he worked as an embryologist in the Baltimore City Hospitals between 1958 and 1960. He then taught biology at Lewis and Clark University and at the University of Virginia.
