Biographical Note

Joyce C. Lewin was a marine biologist and professor in the Department of Oceanography at the University of Washington. Lewin was born on Nov. 13, 1926 in upstate New York. She graduated as class valedictorian from Ilion High School in Ilion, NY in 1944, then went on to receive a B.S. in botany from Cornell University in 1948 and an M.S. (1950) and Ph.D. (1953) in microbiology from Yale University. She was briefly married to biologist Ralph A. Lewin and the couple divorced in the 1960s. Lewin specialized in the study of marine phytoplankton and conducted research at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography before joining the University of Washington Department of Oceanography in 1965. Lewin began teaching summer courses at Friday Harbor Laboratories in 1966, before moving to Friday Harbor in the late 1970s to live and continue her research. Lewin was promoted to full professor in 1969 and retired in 1982 while still retaining a presence at Friday Harbor Laboratories. Joyce Lewin died at the age of 91 on Dec. 4, 2017. Detailed Description of the Collection

  • Series 1: Research Files, Data, and Visual Media, 1952-1992

Files organized chronologically by date. Visual media follows after the research files. Photographic prints, negatives, and slides removed from smaller envelopes are housed in storage that contains the text from the original written on them.
