Llewelyn Riggs McKay (1904-1975) was a professor at the University of Utah who served as head of the Language Department from 1945 until 1965. His father, David O. McKay, was the ninth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This collection contains portraits of Llewelyn McKay, David O. McKay, and photographs of the McKay family. It also contains photographs documenting the mission that Llewelyn McKay served in Germany between 1922 and 1925.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Llewelyn Riggs McKay (1904-1975) was born on June 5, 1904 to David Oman McKay and Emma Ray Riggs McKay. His mother was a musician and music teacher while his father was a religious leader who became the ninth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Llewelyn McKay served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Germany between 1922 and 1925. He later returned to Germany in 1945 as a United States bombing analyst during the aftermath of World War II.

McKay married Alice Kimball Smith on July 19, 1928 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together the couple had three children: Richard L. McKay, Bonnie Jeanne McKay Nelson, and Douglas R. McKay. An educator by profession, Llewelyn McKay received his BA and MA from the University of Utah, and his PhD from Stanford University. McKay began his teaching career at the University of Utah in 1929. He became head of the Language Department in 1945 until 1965. Llewelyn McKay died on January 2, 1975.

The Llewelyn R. McKay photograph collection consists of 2 boxes containing 433 black-and-white photographs. This collection contains portraits of Llewelyn McKay, David O. McKay, and photographs of the McKay family. It also contains photographs documenting the mission that Llewelyn McKay served in Germany between 1922 and 1925, including images included in "Assurances of Love," a compilation of letters and photographs of McKay's mission experience put together by two of his children. It also documents McKay's time at various language schools, including the Army Language School. Box 2 is oversized and contains large portraits and group photographs. The collection dates from approximately 1911 to 1950.
