Biographical Note

Professor of botany and administrator, University of Washington.

Before receiving her doctoral degree from Yale University in 1955, Estella B. Leopold served in a number of research and teaching assistantship at the University of Arizona, Smith College, and Yale. From 1955 to 1976, she was employed as a research botanist by the U.S. Geological Survey in its Paleontology and Stratigraphy Branch in Denver, Colorado. During this period she also taught as an adjoint professor at the University of Colorado. In 1976, Leopold was appointed to the faculty of the University of Washington as professor of botany and forest resources and at the same time became director of the UW Quaternary Research Center. She served in the latter position from 1976 to 1982. In 1989, she was appointed as professor of botany and environmental studies and retained this dual appointment until 1995, when the Institute for Environmental Studies was terminated.
