Historical Background

The Toppenish Review was first published by George A. McArthur in the town of Toppenish, Washington, in 1904. The newspaper was then published by a number of different owners until 1961, when it was purchased by Gail and Gladys Flint. Their son, James Flint, took over its publication in 1975. Flint also published the Yakima Valley Mirror (which merged with the Review in 1971), the Wapato Independent, Viva (Yakima Valley's Spanish newspaper, which began in 1984), and the Yakima Valley Business Journal. In 1999, the Wapato Independent and the Toppenish Review were merged to become the Review Independent.

Content Description

Photographs and negatives made for the Toppenish Review newspaper, as well as for other newspapers including the Wapato Independent, Viva, Teen, Apple, and Business Journal. They document events, people, and places in the local community, which includes the Yakama Indian Reservation and a Filipino community in the nearby town of Wapato, Washington. During the time these photographs were taken, the population of Toppenish transformed from mostly white and Native American to 75 percent Hispanic.
