Historical Note

The Union Oil Company of California was founded in October 1890. Over the course of the late nineteenth, twentieth, and early twenty-first centuries, the company became known for its petroleum prospecting efforts and marketing tactics. In the 1960s, Union delved into its foreign oil interests in Indonesia and continued to gain national attention when, in 1965, the company merged with Pure Oil Company. The merger allowed Union to become a major player in the southern Alaskan petroleum industry. In 1983, the company was reorganized into a subsidiary of Unocal Corporation in Delaware. Today, the company operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary due to its most recent merger with Chevron.
