Biographical Note

James Alexander McAllister was born in Idaho on January 12, 1868. His father moved with his family to the Meadow Creek area of Madison County, Montana Territory, in 1871. They located a ranch there and James eventually established his own home in 1889. The town of McAllister was established in 1896 about seven miles north of Ennis, with a post office bearing the name McAllister officially recognized in 1902. A Methodist Church was founded in the area in 1887, although services had been held in the area since 1869.

The McAllister Collection consists of manuscript biographies of early Meadow Creek residents: "William A. Fletcher," by Edithe Evans Fletcher, circa 1964; "John Jacob Deuble," by Doris Wilson, circa 1964; "James Alexander McAllister," by Mae Pankey, circa 1964. Also included are: Meadow Creek water rights transcriptions, complied by Harry J.B. Wilson; "McAllister Church History," by Mary Redfield Lindsey, 1952; and a photocopy of the Meadow Creek (McAllister) Methodist Church record book, 1869-1944. Subjects include pioneer life in Madison County, farming and ranching, and Methodist Church history.

Acquisition Information

Manuscript biographical sketches and transcribed water rights records were donated to Special Collections by Doris Wilson of Bozeman, Montana, in 1964. A manuscript biography of James Alexander McAllister by Mae Pankey, originally assigned accession number 110 was donated by Thelma McAllister in 1964 and manuscript church histories, with a photocopied church record book, were originally assigned accession number 108.
