Charles Hoffman was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1814 to Jacob and Sarah Hoffman. In his early twenties, he worked as a blacksmith in New York and a farmer in Illinois. Charles died in 1907 and is buried in Kendrick, Idaho.

Jesse Hoffman was born around Nez Perce County, Idaho in 1880 to Charles Hoffman and Lucy Shea. He was the first white child born in the area. He was married to Mabel Hoffman, with whom he had at least two children: Dwight and Betty. Jesse died in 1945 in Lewiston, Idaho.
