Historical Note
Two Pumpelly brothers, James (1774-1845) and William, were surveyors in the Tioga County, New York area in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. James became the first president of Oswego village. His son was George J. Pumpelly (1815-1873). George B. Pumpelly (1842-1921), son of George J., lived in Candor, New York where he was in the lumber and land business. George B.'s son Frederick Gurdon Pumpelly married Margaret "Maggie" Willett. She had two brothers, George Harry and Sydney Willett who served in France in World War I.L.E. Willett (relationship unknown) traveled to England in 1916 and 1923.

Collection includes field books of surveys in New York State done by James and William Pumpelly (1799-1823); World War I letters from Harry and Sydney Willett to Margaret Pumpelly; travel diaries of L.E. Willett (1916-1923); financial documents of George J. Pumpelly (1835-1871); patent issued to George B. Pumpelly in 1900; and biographical information, personal memorabilia, and newspaper clippings on Pumpelly and Willett family members.
