Content Description
Anonymous World War II diary written by a member of the Japanese Navy who was assigned to a hospital ship in the Pacific, dating from 1943-1944. Collection also includes a partial translation, handwritten, in English. A note by the translator indicates that the diary was written in two separate hands.
The diary contains details of the movements of the hospital vessel, information about the leisure time activities of the naval seamen and officers, descriptions of attacks and counter-attacks from Allied forces, and the author's opinion on the war and war strategy.
The translation of the diary is not complete.

Administrative Information
Custodial History
Diary and its partial translation were donated by a former Albertsons Library Head Librarian. Before this, the contents were held by a cousin of the donor, whose husband (deceased at the time of the donation) had made several trips to Japan. Nothing else is known of the diary and its translation.
Acquisition Information
Gift of Timothy A. Brown, Head Librarian of Albertsons Library, in May of 2005.
Processing Note
A copy of the diary was sent to the Consulate-General of Japan, whose office conducted an investigation of the diary in 2005. This investigation was not able to determine the author of the diary and did not include the name of the ship.
