Biographical Note
William (Bill) D. Lipe was born in Struggleville, Oklahoma on May 5, 1935. He is an archaeologist with expertise in the North American Southwest, archaeological method and theory, and cultural resource management. Dr. Lipe received his B.A. from the University of Oklahoma in 1957 and his Ph.D. from Yale in 1966, both in Anthropology. His Ph.D. was based on fieldwork in the Glen Canyon area of southeastern Utah. He has also directed or collaborated on research on Ancestral Pueblo settlement patterns, community organization, and socio-cultural change in the Northern San Juan region of Colorado and Utah. Dr. Lipe began his career at WSU in 1976 and has served as Professor Emeritus since 2001. Prior to employment at WSU, he worked at the Museum of Northern Arizona and the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton.

This collection contains published and unpublished research and correspondence by archaeologist and WSU Professor Emeritus William D. Lipe. It consists of articles, chapters, presentations, and conference papers authored by Dr. Lipe from 1960 to 1981. The bulk of correspondence is circa 1974 to 1993. Topics include archaeological sites in Southeastern Utah and Southwestern Colorado, Ancestral Pueblo culture history, professional education in archaeology, and book chapters on Southwestern archaeology. The collection contains drafts with Dr. Lipe’s revisions, correspondence from editors and other research collaborators, photographs of archaeological sites, and maps and charts related to Dr. Lipe’s research. Some correspondence is from Dr. Lipe’s work at SUNY-Binghamton and the Museum of Northern Arizona.
