Historical Note

Arthur Sidney Huey, a petroleum geologist, was born 29 July 1909 in Columbus, Kansas to Sidney Breeze and Lottie Mae (Driscoll) Huey. He attended high school in Los Angeles and received an AB degree in geology from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, in 1932. In June of 1940 he received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Huey worked as a geologist for Shell Oil Company from 1936-1948, performing district research work in Montana and San Joaquin Valley, California. He resigned to accept a position as Chief Geologist with Hancock Oil Company in Long Beach, California. From 1956-1959 Huey served as Manager of Foreign Exploration for Hancock, where he developed exploration in such countries as Venezuela, Kuwait, Bolivia, and various oil fields in California. In 1959 Huey became Chief Foreign Geologist for Signal Oil and Gas Company, a company that merged with Hancock Oil Company. During his tenure with Signal, Huey developed exploration in Iran, Argentina, Venezuela, Kuwait, Bolivia, Guatemala, the North Sea, and Tunisia.

In 1966 Huey resigned from Signal to work as an independent consulting geologist and served as special adviser on exploration for the Israeli Ministry of Development. From 1968-1970 he served as President and Director of Oil Securities and Metals, Inc., and from 1970-1973 he was Director of Petroleum Exploration and Development Company (PEDCO), a Bermuda corporation bought out by British banking interests in 1974. In 1980 he became vice-president of CEMCO until his retirement in 1983.

Arthur Huey married LaVerne Brunson of Ft. Worth, Texas in 1940. They had two children: daughter Shaun (Charlsie), b. 1943, and son Raymond, b. 1944. Huey died in December 1984 after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Content Description

The Arthur Sidney Huey Papers, 1890-1981, contain correspondence, geologic reports, studies, maps, and magazine articles regarding Huey’s long career as a petroleum geologist. The collection covers a broad range of topics, from Huey’s work in Shell, Hancock, and Signal Companies to his later research as a consulting geologist.

The collection reflects Huey’s main areas of interest, including petroleum in California. There are many reports, well logs and articles regarding oil and gas fields in California. In addition, the papers reveal much of Huey’s international exploration ventures in such countries as Venezuela, Tunisia, Spain, and the Middle East.

Since the bulk of the collection concerns Huey’s career, there is not much personal material. However, Series II contains notes and transcripts from college classes. Series V (Subseries III) includes some biographical material and Huey’s resume. This subseries also contains several books personally inscribed by the authors. Most of the photographs are unidentified and undated

Newspaper clippings were replaced by preservation copies and several reports were taken out of notebooks and transferred to folders. Original order was maintained where possible, but the bulk of the collection was arranged as seemed most useful to the researcher.
