Historical Note

In the United States, the Morrill Act of 1862 set aside public land to support a university in each state dedicated to agriculture and mechanics. The Hatch Act of 1887 provided for the establishment of agricultural experiment stations to be associated with these land grant universities.

The University of Wyoming, founded in 1887 under the terms of these acts, emphasized agricultural research as an important part of its mission. The University opened its first Agricultural Experiment Station in 1891 with the goal of developing state resources for the benefit of inhabitants. During the early years of the university, agricultural activity occurred mainly at the experiment farms with few students enrolled in a classroom-based program. The college established the Animal Husbandry department in 1911, which was subsequently renamed Animal Production in 1934, the Animal Science Division in 1961, and the Animal Science Department in 1986.
