Content Description

The provenance of this collection of 24 black-and-white prints is best explained by the writer of the captions in the photograph album they were originally contained in:

"The accompanying pictures were taken at the Sun and Bear Dances of the Ute Indian tribe at Whiterocks, Uintah Indian Reservation, Utah, about 1900 by Mr. Merriman, operator of the Whiterocks Trading Post. The prints were made by Dean E.A. Hoebel from negatives now (1953) in the possession of Mr. Bob Merriman, son of the aforementioned Mr. Merriman, who is the present operator of Whiterocks Trading Post." The writer of this and the photograph captions is unknown. The photographs were removed from the album and the existing captions were all copied and placed in the folders with them.

The Ute Indian Sun and Bear Dances photograph collection is digitized.
