Biographical Note

The Agricultural Engineering department evolved under the College of Agriculture in 1920 to provide a combination of mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering skills to provide a broad understanding of farmer's problems and needs; prior to 1920 educational, research, and project activities in Agricultural Engineering was a function performed by the Experiment Station. In 1963, the Agricultural Engineering department transferred from the College of Agriculture to the College of Engineering. In 1987, Agricultural Engineering ceased to exist independently after its incorporation within the Civil Engineering department.

Under the Experiment Station, Agricultural Engineering staff conducted research and experiments on the Experiment Station farm and substations located around the state (e.g. Judith Basin near Moccasin, the Yellowstone Valley near Huntley, Northern Montana near Havre, and Bitter Root Valley near Corvallis). Agricultural Engineering staff also published bulletins providing the results of their experimental work. Departmental staff also provided instruction to students of the College of Agriculture. After the department of Agricultural Engineering formed under the College of Agriculture in 1920, departmental staff continued their work with the Experiment Station, conducting research and experiments as well as bulletin publications. The department developed a series of courses to coordinate the sciences of agronomy, soils, mechanics, electricity, hydraulics, thermodynamics, and structures in order to address mechanical and engineering difficulties found on farms. Courses for the Bachelor's of Science degree included irrigation, drainage, farm power and machinery, as well as farm buildings and structures. Beginning in 1962 the department implemented graduate courses in Agricultural Engineering. No notable changes occurred to the department with its shift from the College of Agriculture to the College of Engineering in 1963 until the department was combined with Civil Engineering in 1987.

Over the course of the department's history, the Agricultural Engineering department had at least four department heads: Harvey E. Murdock (1920-1941), Olaf W. Monson (1949-1961), Charles C. Bowman (1961-1973), and William E. Larsen (1973-1987).

Content Description

The Agricultural Engineering department records are an extensive set of files from multiple accessions donated over the course of several years. Organization of the materials was haphazard and most accessions lacked inventories to provide a point of reference. When possible the folder titles provided by the department have been used and denoted by quotations. In order to present the records in a manner that provides an accurate representation of the department's activities, arrangement of the materials in this collection have been organized by genre, then alphabetically, and finally chronologically. Topics and activities represented are standard operational records, special project documentation, faculty teaching and research, and photographs of both personnel and working projects. Charles C. Bowman, Olaf W. Monson, and Harvey E. Murdock created the bulk of the records within this collection; however, other individuals associated with the department are also represented. The records retained in this collection do not represent the entirety of the Agricultural Engineering department's personnel but are the only materials currently known to exist in the University Archives.
