Historical Note

Upon recommendation from the Academic Senate in 1974, the General Education program was replaced by a newly formed Liberal Education program in 1975. Jackson Newell was the first Dean of Liberal Education from 1974 to 1990 when he took a leave of absences from the University of Utah to take a position at Deep Springs College in California. Slava Lubmudrov took over as the Acting Dean of Liberal Education from 1990 to 1991. In 1991, the Liberal Education program was placed under the newly created Office of Undergraduate Studies led by Reba Keele who was the first dean of the department from 1991 to 1996. Under the reorganization, Slava Lubmudrov served as Associate Dean of Liberal Education until 1998. In 1995 Jackson Newell took a three year leave of absence from the University of Utah to become the President of Deep Springs College in California. He later retired from the University of Utah in 1998 but continued on at Deep Springs College until 2004
