Summary
The John M. Comfort Collection consists of one folder of original and photocopied ephemeral documents and five copy photographic negatives, all pertaining to the early history of Madison County, Virginia City, Twin Bridges, and Bannack, Montana. Photographic negatives pertain to the Twin Bridges Public Library, mining in Alder Gulch, and the State Orphan’s Home in Twin Bridges. Photocopied documents include invoices and receipts from the John S. Rockfellow firm in Bannack, the Hussey, Dahler and Company Bankers of Virginia, a 1942 letter from Ernest Haycox regarding the stage route from Virginia City to Bannack, and gold claim receipts.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

John Mortimer Comfort was born on June 13, 1910 at Twin Bridges, Montana. He was the son of Lynn Lyman Edgar Comfort and Maria Eliza Lott, descendants of early Montana pioneers. He became a county attorney in Virginia City and developed a keen interest in local history. Comfort also served as a director for two Virginia City museums. He eventually moved to Cut Bank, Montana and died in Great Falls on March 15, 1985.
