This collection contains over 1,100 photographic images (negatives as well as framed and unframed prints) of folklorists taken by UCLA folklorist Michael Owen Jones and/or his students and colleagues. Also includes conference materials, where most of the photographs were taken.

Historical Note

Michael Owen Jones is an American folklorist recognized for his influential work on material culture, folk art, and vernacular creativity. He earned his Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana University and in 1968 joined the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the Folklore and Mythology program, where he spent the entirety of his career. Jones's research focused on how individuals and communities express identity and values through craftsmanship, ritual, and everyday creativity. His publications include notable studies on folk artisans, the cultural significance of handmade objects, and the nature of creativity in daily life. Jones has authored more than 200 academic works related to his study and interpretation of folk traditions and material expression.
