Historical Note
James C. Auld grew up in Chicago. He attended the University of Wyoming from 1968-1970, before transferring to Northern Illinois University. He majored in political science. While at the University of Wyoming, he created a student paper, “Free Lunch.” Approximately 100 copies of each issue were printed, which he sold on campus for 10 cents. The paper was in print from the fall of 1969 to the spring of 1970. The Black 14 event led Auld to create the paper. He wrote under the pen name Jasmine Charlevoix. Auld moved to Seattle in the 1970s, where he became an avid researcher of the fur trade industry, including Jedediah Smith. He also co-wrote a play about the artist Alfred Jacob Miller and the 1837 Green River Rendezvous titled “Three Worlds Meet.”
