Biographical Note

Leona Lillian Lampi was born on September 30, 1924 in Red Lodge, Montana. Her parents, John and Lillian, were respective first- and second-generation Finnish immigrants who took a lively interest in community arts and culture and co-founded Red Lodge’s annual Festival of Nations.

After graduating from Carbon County High School in 1942, Leona enrolled at the University of Montana (then called Montana State University) in Missoula. She studied Spanish and graduated with honors before moving to Washington, D.C. in 1946 and working at the Finnish Legation. After a brief stint living in New York City, Leona returned to the University of Montana to complete her master’s degree. She then moved to Helsinki, Finland and worked as a secretary and translator.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Leona continued to travel and move frequently between Montana and Finland as her career pivoted towards teaching. In 1968, she moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to accept a position at Northern Idaho College, where she taught English, Spanish, and Finnish until her retirement in 1986.

Leona’s wanderlust and intellectual pursuits did not diminish in her later years. After retirement, she took several trips to Mexico, and in 1998 she published a book, At the Foot of the Beartooth Mountains: A History of the Finnish Community in Red Lodge, Montana, based on her research and oral histories conducted with the elderly Finnish community in Red Lodge.

Leona was married and divorced two times and had one son, Jon Pilati. She died on April 28, 2019.
